A Prayer for Unselfish Service in the Gospel
"What is my reward then? Verily that, when I preach the gospel, I may make the gospel of Christ without charge, that I abuse not my power in the gospel." - 1 Corinthians 9:18

Heavenly Father,
We come before You today with hearts full of gratitude and awe for the grace and love that You have shown us through Your Son, Jesus Christ. In the quietness of this moment, we reflect deeply on the words of Paul in 1 Corinthians 9:18, where he boldly asks, "What is my reward then? Verily that, when I preach the gospel, I may make the gospel of Christ without charge, that I abuse not my power in the gospel."
Lord, as we meditate on this verse, we acknowledge the profound implications that it holds for our lives and our ministry. We thank You for the example of the Apostle Paul, whose heart was always to serve You and others selflessly. He committed himself to spreading the gospel—not for personal gain, nor out of desire for recognition, but purely out of love for Christ and a desire to see souls saved. He recognized that service in the Kingdom comes with responsibilities, and that true reward lies not in earthly accolades but in the heavenly treasures we lay up by living out Your truth.
Father, we pray for a spirit of humility and a desire to serve without expectation. Help us to preach the gospel with passion and sincerity, just as Paul did. Instill in us the understanding that the true essence of our work lies not in the accolades we receive, but in the impact we have on the lives of those around us. May we be faithful stewards of the message of Christ, committing ourselves to sharing the gospel freely, as we have freely received it.
Lord, fortify our hearts against the temptations that may arise to seek personal gain or recognition from our efforts in ministry. When we are faced with opportunities to promote ourselves or to leverage our positions for personal advantage, help us to remember the oaths we take as servants of Christ. Remind us that we are called to be His ambassadors, and we carry the weight of His message, which transcends all human accolades and motivations.
Purify our motives, O Lord! Help us to preach the gospel without charge, ensuring that no one can rightly accuse us of abusing the power given to us. May we hold with integrity the authority that comes with proclaiming Your Word. Allow our words and actions to reflect the love and sacrifice of Christ, who gave His life as a ransom for many. May we radiate the joy of serving You, so that those around us may be drawn to the hope that lies within us.
We also pray for those who are burdened by the weight of ministry, those who feel the pressure to perform, and those who may have lost sight of the true purpose of the gospel. Strengthen their hearts and renew their spirits, Lord. Remind them that their labor is not in vain as they commit to serving others with the love of Christ. We ask that You provide them with fresh vision and renewed purpose in their missions.
Teach us, Father, as Your church, to support one another, to uplift one another, and to rejoice in every opportunity to share Your truth, regardless of the cost. Help us to understand what it means to give without expecting a return, just as You have poured Your blessings upon us freely.
Finally, Lord, may we always look to You for our reward. Keep our eyes fixed on the eternal above, knowing that true honor comes from being faithful to Your calling. In everything we do, may it continually point back to You and Your glory, not our own. Let us echo Paul’s heart as we live to preach the gospel and share the good news of Christ with boldness and integrity, proclaiming it freely, for we have received freely.
In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray,
Amen.
