The daily course of the sun from east to west is a universal human reference point; lightning that crosses that whole span suggests an event that encompasses the whole human stage. Matthew 24:27 therefore functions as a statement of contrast: deceptive reports invite you to “go” and “seek” in specific places, but the true coming of the Son of man will be self-authenticating, as evident as lightning. Its significance is pastoral as well as prophetic. It is pastoral because it warns believers not to be carried away by sensational claims and hidden revelations. It is prophetic because it sketches the nature of the event: sudden, brilliant, universally manifest, and bound up with the authority and glory of the returning Christ. In a chapter where many signs can be misread and many voices can mislead, this verse provides an anchor: when the Son of man comes, it will not be a secret to be discovered, but a revelation that cannot be missed.
