Living in the Light of “That Blessed Hope”
"Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;" - Titus 2:13

“Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;” (Titus 2:13, KJV)
Titus 2:13 places the believer’s heart and mind in the posture of expectancy. The verse does not merely describe a doctrine to be affirmed; it describes a direction for daily living—“Looking for that blessed hope.” To “look for” something is to watch for it, to anticipate it, to orient your plans and priorities around it. Scripture presents the return of Jesus Christ not as a distant religious idea, but as a present anchor for the soul. When the days are confusing, when the world feels unstable, and when personal trials weigh heavily, God gives His people a steadying perspective: our story is moving toward “the glorious appearing” of Jesus Christ.
Notice first that Paul calls it “that blessed hope.” Hope in the Bible is not wishful thinking. It is not a vague optimism that things might improve. Biblical hope is confident expectation rooted in the character and promise of God. This hope is “blessed” because it is God-given and God-centered. It is blessed because it lifts the believer’s eyes above temporary circumstances and fixes them upon an eternal certainty. Many things in life can be taken away—health, opportunities, relationships, resources—but this hope cannot be stolen. It rests on the unchanging promise that Jesus Christ will come again and that His coming will complete what His saving work began.
Then Paul adds, “and the glorious appearing.” The return of Christ is described as an “appearing,” something visible and unmistakable. It will not be hidden or uncertain. It will be “glorious,” marked by majesty, holiness, and divine authority. The same world that often ignores Christ now, and the same culture that may trivialize His name, will one day confront the reality of His glory. This truth brings comfort to the believer who feels overlooked or pressured. Your faith is not futile, your labor is not meaningless, your obedience is not wasted. The glory of Christ’s appearing will vindicate every quiet act of faithfulness done in His name.
Paul also calls Jesus “the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ.” This phrase gathers together both the majesty and the mercy of the Lord. He is “the great God”—worthy of worship, sovereign over history, and exalted above all. Yet He is also “our Saviour”—near to us, compassionate toward sinners, and committed to redeeming His people. The One who will appear in glory is the same One who saves. This is important: we do not wait for an unknown ruler or a cold judge; we wait for “our Saviour.” For the believer, the return of Christ is not terror—it is joy. It is not dread—it is hope.
To live “looking for” Christ means we cultivate readiness. Readiness is not frantic date-setting or anxious speculation. Readiness is steady devotion: turning from sin, clinging to Christ, and ordering our lives with eternity in view. It means we measure decisions differently. We ask, “Will this matter when Jesus appears?” We invest in what lasts: prayer, Scripture, obedience, mercy, integrity, witness, and love. A heart set on Christ’s appearing becomes less captivated by the applause of people and more concerned with pleasing the Lord.
This posture also strengthens endurance. Trials change when they are placed beside the promise of Christ’s return. Suffering is still painful, but it is no longer final. Grief is still real, but it is no longer hopeless. In seasons of delay, when answers seem slow and justice seems absent, Titus 2:13 reminds us that history is not cycling aimlessly—it is moving toward a decisive appearing. The believer can wait with patience because Christ Himself is the destination.
Finally, “that blessed hope” purifies our worship. If Jesus is truly coming, then our lives belong to Him now. We worship not only in songs, but in a steady surrender of our will. We learn to say, “Lord, make my life fit for Your coming. Shape my desires. Guard my steps. Teach me to love what You love.” The hope of His appearing is not escapism; it is spiritual clarity. It helps us live with seriousness about sin and sweetness about grace.
Let Titus 2:13 call you back to watchfulness. Lift your eyes from what is temporary to the certainty of what is eternal. You are not simply enduring days until the end—you are “Looking for that blessed hope.” And that hope has a name: “the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ.”
Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, keep my heart awake and my life faithful as I look for Your glorious appearing. Help me to live today in a way that honors You, trusts You, and longs for You. Amen.
