Returning to Our First Love: A Call to the Church

"Revelation 2:1-4: 1 Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks; 2 I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars: 3 And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name's sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted. 4 Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love." - Revelation 2:1-4

"Revelation 2:1-4:
1 Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks;
2 I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars:
3 And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name's sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted.
4 Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love." - Revelation 2:{verse.verse_number}

In the book of Revelation, a deep and prophetic message reaches out from the divine to the heart of the Church in Ephesus. In Revelation 2:1-4, the words of the Lord, written to the angel of this church, are both commendation and urgent correction. He states, "I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience," (Revelation 2:2 KJV) before unveiling a crucial truth: they have left their first love.

As we immerse ourselves in this scripture, we can almost hear the reverberation of the Lord's voice through time, speaking not only to the Ephesians but to us today. First, we recognize the affirmation the Lord grants them. The church of Ephesus had been diligent, striving hard for the Gospel. The Lord acknowledges their works, labor, and patience. They were a church that knew the importance of standing firm against evil, testing those who claimed to be apostles yet were found to be lying. They had shown resilience, bearing burdens for Christ's sake, and enduring hardships without allowing their faith to wane. How many churches today would appreciate a similar accolade from God?

Yet, the Lord does not leave it at mere praise. He introduces a significant concern by stating, "Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love" (Revelation 2:4 KJV). It is here that we find the crux of the passage and why it resonates so profoundly with each of us. Despite their commendable attributes, the church had lost the fervor of their original love for Christ — the passion and joy that marked their initial encounter with Him. The essence of Christianity is love; it is a relationship ignited by the love of Christ in our hearts, compelling us to serve, endure, and thrive in faith.

How often does it happen that we, too, find ourselves engrossed in the works of our faith yet neglect the loving relationship that fuels it? Perhaps life becomes burdensome with responsibilities — work, family, and church duties occupy our time, and our love for our Savior fades into the background like an old photograph. We become performance-driven and task-oriented, sacrificing the intimacy of communion with God for the sake of fulfilling obligations. The Lord’s words resonate poignantly: we must not lose sight of our first love.

Remember the first moment when you knew true freedom in Christ? The joy that bubbled over when grace washed over your soul and shame was lifted? Those initial thrilling sparks ignite a fire that should never be diminished. The loss of this first love leaves a void that works alone cannot fill — our hearts were meant for more.

The Lord's call is to remember and to return. In verse 5, He advises them to "remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent" (KJV). This is not merely a call to recognize the past, but it’s a clarion call to actively engage in the process of repentance. To repent means to turn back. As we acknowledge where we have departed from our affections for Him, we must take tangible steps to rekindle that love.

How do we return? It begins with reflection and renewal. We drink in His Word, soak in prayer, and surround ourselves in worship, allowing Him to soften our hearts and awaken the love that may have grown dormant. Engage in acts of service not out of obligation, but from a heart aflame with love for Christ.

Let this passage be a gentle reminder that our faith must be rooted in love, the catalyst that drives our actions. As we cultivate our relationship with God, we must cherish our first love and never allow it to wane, for therein lies the power of our witness and the fuel for our ministry. Let us strive to be a church filled with love that reflects the light of Christ in a darkened world, drawing others to Him by our fierce devotion and heartfelt worship.
