“Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.” (Psalm 139:12, KJV)

There are seasons when life feels like night—when answers seem distant, when direction is unclear, and when fear or sorrow thickens the air. In those moments, darkness can feel like a covering. We may assume that what we cannot see, God cannot see. We may imagine our confusion hides us from His gaze, or that our pain is too deep to be understood. Yet Psalm 139:12 speaks with gentle certainty: “the darkness hideth not from thee.” Darkness does not conceal you from God. The things that overwhelm you do not overwhelm Him. The places where you feel most unseen are not places where He loses sight of you.

This verse does not merely say God can see in the dark, as though He possesses better vision than we do. It says something far greater: “the night shineth as the day.” To the Lord, night is not a diminished version of day. Night is not a problem to solve. It shines. What appears to you as obscurity is, to Him, clarity. What seems like delay is not disorganization in God’s hands. What seems like silence is not absence. God’s understanding does not fluctuate with your circumstances, and His presence does not dim when your hope feels faint.

The psalmist goes even further: “the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.” We often divide our lives into categories—good days and bad days, spiritual highs and spiritual lows, moments when we feel strong and moments when we feel ashamed. We can start believing that God draws near when we are “in the light,” and withdraws when we are “in the dark.” But Scripture overturns that fear. Darkness and light are alike to Him. Not alike in moral value—God is holy, and darkness is often used in Scripture to describe sin or evil—but alike in the sense that neither changes His ability to rule, to know, and to reach.

This is deeply comforting for the believer who feels trapped in heaviness. You may not understand why God has allowed a particular night. You may be praying, waiting, and wondering if anything is happening. Psalm 139:12 assures you that God is not working with incomplete information. He is not guessing. He does not need you to light the path for Him. He is already present in the very place you are trying to endure.

It is also sobering in the best way. If darkness cannot hide us from God, then secret sin cannot remain secret before Him. The hidden habit, the private resentment, the unseen compromise—none of it is concealed by “night.” Yet even this truth is not meant to crush us; it is meant to draw us into honest confession and real freedom. If God already sees, then we can stop pretending. We can bring what is hidden into His light, not because He is unaware, but because He is merciful.

Psalm 139 is a psalm of intimate knowledge: God knows where we are, what we think, what we do, and what we need. Psalm 139:12 becomes an anchor when you feel lost in darkness. You can say, “Lord, this feels like night to me, but it is not night to You.” You can trust that God’s guidance is not limited by your visibility. You can believe that His hand is not weakened by your weariness. You can rest in the truth that the same God who meets you in the sunlight also meets you in the shadows.

If you are in a dark place today, do not measure God’s nearness by your feelings. Measure it by His Word: “the darkness hideth not from thee.” Let that promise steady your heart. The night may be long, but it is not empty. The darkness may be real, but it is not final. The God who sees in the dark is the God who will lead you through it.

Prayer: Lord, when my life feels like night, remind me that the darkness hideth not from thee. Teach me to trust that the night shineth as the day to You. Help me walk honestly before You, and rest in Your presence until the light comes. Amen.
