Awake to Righteousness: The Call to Vigilance
"Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids." - Proverbs 6:4

In Proverbs 6:4, the wise man reaches out with fervent exhortation, saying, “Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids.” At first glance, this may seem like a simple admonition to stay awake and alert, but the depths of this verse invite us to reflect on the spiritual implications of slumber in our lives. How often do we allow ourselves to drift into complacency, closing our eyes to the realities surrounding us? What does it mean to be spiritually awake, and what are the consequences of letting our vigilance slip away?
To give not sleep to our eyes points to the need for constant awareness of our spiritual state. The image of heavy eyelids symbolizes a loss of alertness to God’s presence in our lives. In a world so filled with distractions and temptations, it is crucial to cultivate a heart that remains attuned to the voice of the Lord. We are called to be watchful, ready to respond to the Spirit’s promptings, and engaged in the purpose God has for us. Each moment of drowsiness can lead to missed opportunities for growth, service, and meaningful engagement with others.
Sleep often connotes rest and rejuvenation; however, the sleep referred to here is not about the physical refreshment we so desperately need from time to time, but rather a metaphor for spiritual lethargy. This call to action is particularly poignant in our society today. Amidst the noise and chaos, it is all too easy for believers to drift into apathy towards prayer, scripture, worship, and community. We can find ourselves lulled into a mindset where we think, "I will read my Bible tomorrow. I will pray later. I do not need to witness today"—essentially giving ourselves permission to slumber spiritually.
God’s desire for each of us is to be alert and active in our faith. The call to vigilance echoes throughout scripture. In Matthew 26:41, Jesus advises, "Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." The recognition that our flesh may often overpower our spirit drives us to depend wholly on God. When we refuse to let sleep take hold of our eyes, we position ourselves to resist temptation and engage with the world in a way that is faithful and true to our calling as Christ followers.
Moreover, laziness or spiritual indifference can lead to grave consequences. Proverbs 6:6-11 follows with a vivid example of the ant—a tiny, industrious creature. The ant teaches us the importance of diligence and foresight. The lazy man is warned that “poverty shall come as one that travelleth; and thy want as an armed man.” The message is clear: failing to act proactively leads to detrimental outcomes, both physically and spiritually.
As we ponder this verse, we must ask ourselves: Are we spiritually awake? Are we recognizing the moments God is calling us to step up, to pray, to serve, and to witness? If we find ourselves allowing slumber to encroach upon our spiritual disciplines and commitments, it is time for revival within our souls. Let us stir ourselves awake, calling upon God to renew our passion for Him.
Let today be a turning point. Let us seek God’s strength to be vigilant in prayer, to engage actively with His Word, and to encourage one another in our spiritual journeys. May we surrender the temptation to succumb to sleep, embracing the wakefulness that leads to a fruitful and impactful life in Christ. As we rise in our pursuit of God, He promises that in our diligence, we will find the true rest that our souls long for—rest in His love, in His presence, and in His eternal promises.
