In the book of Numbers 32:34, we read, "And the children of Gad built Dibon, and Ataroth, and Aroer." At first glance, this verse may seem like a simple historical account of the tribes of Israel establishing cities as they settled in the Promised Land. However, when we delve deeper, we can uncover profound lessons about faith, perseverance, and the responsibilities that come with our inheritances.

The context surrounding this verse is critical. The children of Gad, along with the tribes of Reuben and half of Manasseh, had requested to settle on the eastern side of the Jordan River rather than crossing into Canaan. This request was met with some resistance from Moses, who feared their choice would discourage the other tribes from taking possession of the land that God had promised them. The children of Gad assured Moses that they would help their brethren fight for their inheritance before settling in their own lands. This commitment reflects a vital principle that resonates throughout Scripture: our choices affect not just us but also the community around us.

As the children of Gad went on to establish Dibon, Ataroth, and Aroer, they were literally building their future. Each city they founded represented a step in claiming their identity as a distinct tribe of Israel. This act of building can be mirrored in our own lives. What are we constructing as we settle into our personal ‘lands’ or situations? Little by little, day after day, we are creating our realities, whether that be in our families, workplaces, or communities. The question we must ask ourselves is: Are we building for the glory of God?

The cities named in this verse also indicate a process of transformation. Dibon means “a place of words,” Ataroth translates to “crowns,” and Aroer means “a bare place.” Each name holds significance in its own right. When we build our lives, what characteristics will define the structures we raise? Are they places filled with uplifting words and encouragement, where we crown others in love and generosity, or do we find ourselves in barren lands devoid of blessings?

In our daily struggles, we often forget that God encourages us to be active participants in the work of building our lives. The children of Gad didn’t wait for someone else to create their cities. Instead, they stepped forward and took action— a clear reminder for us. In Matthew 7:24-25, Jesus tells us, "Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock." Just as Gad’s children built tangible cities, we too must diligently construct our spiritual houses on the foundation of Christ’s teachings.

Moreover, building involves a connection to community and accountability. Moses’ concerns remind us that our choices, and the cities we establish, have a ripple effect on others. As followers of Christ, we are called to build not only for ourselves but for those around us. We are to encourage one another to dwell in unity (Psalm 133:1) and to lead by example in establishing communities filled with hope, love, and righteousness. Our faith, much like the cities of Gad, should create a beacon of light for others to see and experience.
