The Dried Soul: Longing Beyond Manna
"But now our soul is dried away: there is nothing at all, beside this manna, before our eyes." - Numbers 11:6

In the wilderness, amidst the vast, desert expanse of their journey, the Israelites found themselves in a profound moment of despair, captured richly in the words of Numbers 11:6: "But now our soul is dried away: there is nothing at all, beside this manna, before our eyes." This verse lays bare their dissatisfaction and hunger not just physically, but spiritually and emotionally—a powerful reminder of the human condition when faced with monotony and unfulfilled desires.
The Israelites had witnessed the miraculous provision of God in the form of manna—a heavenly sustenance that fell from the sky each day to nourish them. Yet, after a time, even this miraculous provision became mundane. Their initial awe turned to apathy; their gratitude for God’s goodness dulled into a yearning for the variety of food they once knew in Egypt. How easily they shifted from a mindset of abundance to one of lack!
This poignant verse illustrates a potent spiritual truth: It is not solely material sustenance that nourishes the soul, but a deep and abiding relationship with our Creator. The phrase "our soul is dried away" speaks to a soul that has ceased to thrive, one that is languishing for lack of fulfillment. The Israelites found themselves fixated on their immediate physical wants, forgetting that the true essence of their being extended far beyond bread and meat; it was about their relationship with God.
Jesus echoed this sentiment when He said in John 6:35, "I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst." Here, we confront a crucial question: Are we feeding our souls with the true bread—the Word of God and the presence of Christ—or are we merely seeking scraps from the plate of worldly offerings?
The complaint of the Israelites brings forth a challenge for all believers: the tendency to shift our focus from God's faithfulness to our own desires. How many times do we find ourselves in a similar predicament? In our daily lives, it is easy to become fixated on what we lack. Perhaps it’s the longing for a different job, a different relationship, or a release from a particular trial. In doing so, we overlook the miracle that God provides daily. Just as the manna was sufficient for their needs, God’s grace, love, and presence are adequate for our spiritual sustenance.
In this age of instant gratification and the pursuit of comfort, we often forget the lessons of the wilderness. The Israelites’ cries were not simply for food—they were indicative of a heart that wavered in faith. God had delivered them from slavery, yet they struggled to see beyond their immediate discomfort. They allowed their circumstances to dictate their perspective. Just like them, we too must guard against this reactive mindset, which can lead to spiritual dryness.
The antidote to a dried soul lies in remembering the faithfulness of God. When we find ourselves wanting, let us remind ourselves of God's past provisions in our lives. He is Jehovah Jireh, our provider. We may not always understand His methods or timing, but we can trust that His plan for us is always good (Jeremiah 29:11).
During those moments of spiritual drought, may we turn to God with honesty, yet in faith, seeking Him as the only source of true satisfaction. Engage in prayer, immerse yourself in His Word, and cultivate a deeper relationship with Jesus. As we do so, we begin to shift our perspective from lack to abundance, nourishing our souls with the richness of His presence.
As we reflect on Numbers 11:6, let us commit to seeking the Bread of Life daily, nourishing our souls so they may thrive in the desert! Each day we have the choice to choose God’s sustenance over the world’s distractions. Will you choose Him today?
