Resurrection Wonder: Encountering the Empty Tomb
"Mark 16:5-6: 5 And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted. 6 And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him." - Mark 16:5-6

As dawn began to break on the first day of the week, a group of women ventured toward the sepulchre where the body of Jesus had been laid. Their hearts were heavy with grief, filled with sorrow over the ignominious death of their beloved Lord. They had come to anoint His lifeless body, burdened not only by the weight of their mourning but also by the very real concern of how they would remove the stone sealing the entrance of the tomb. Yet, as they approached, the earth trembled, and the stone had already been rolled away.
In Mark 16:5-6 we read: "And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted. And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him."
The first observation that should fill our hearts with awe is the appearance of the angelic messenger. Clothed in radiant white, he symbolized purity and the miraculous nature of the event that had just occurred. The women, upon seeing him, were overcome with fear, not just because of the radiance that enveloped them but because they had to confront the reality that everything they had known had been turned upside down. Their fear was a reflection of their confusion and disbelief; they had come looking for a dead body but found life in His absence.
How many times do we find ourselves in situations where we feel overwhelmed by fear and uncertainty? When we seek answers and instead encounter the unexpected, our natural inclination is often to retreat, to let doubt and despair take hold. God understands our frailty. The exhortation of the young man, "Be not affrighted," serves as a gentle reminder that our faith need not succumb to fear.
The news delivered by the angel is the foundation of our faith: "He is risen; he is not here." These words radically transformed the understanding of death and life. Jesus, who had been crucified, had triumphed over the grave, defeating sin and death itself. The empty tomb stands as a powerful testimony of hope and resurrection. This message was not just for the women at the tomb but resonates across the ages for each of us today. In a world riddled with despair, the resurrection signifies that hope is not lost. Every fear we face and every problem we encounter can be met with the assurance that our Savior is alive, and He holds the keys to life eternal.
The angel then instructs them to behold the place where they laid Him. This call to observation is not merely about seeing the empty grave but an invitation to recognize the significance of what has occurred. The empty grave signifies that life can emerge from the most desolate of circumstances. It beckons us to reflect on our lives, to confront the places where we have buried our hopes, dreams, and even our faith.
As we ponder Mark 16:5-6, let it be a catalyst for revival in our spirits. What tombs do we need to encounter, and what stones need to be rolled away? What doubts do we carry that Jesus longs to address?
