His Will, Not Mine: Embracing the Purpose of Christ
"For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me." - John 6:38

In the Gospel of John, chapter 6, verse 38, we read the profound declaration of Jesus: "For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me." This powerful statement encapsulates the essence of Christ's mission on earth and challenges us to reflect on our own lives and our alignment with God’s will.
To fully appreciate this verse, we must first consider the context in which it is spoken. Jesus had just performed the miraculous feeding of the 5,000 with five loaves and two fish, a sign of His compassion and divine provision. However, as the crowd followed Him, their intentions were questioned. They sought Him not for the sake of His message, but for the material benefits He offered. In response to their misguided motives, Jesus redirected their attention from physical sustenance to spiritual nourishment.
When Jesus said He came not to do His own will, but the will of the Father, He was making a radical statement about the nature of His mission. It reveals His humility and submission to God’s plan, despite having divine authority. Imagine the depth of this claim: the Son of God, who existed with the Father from the beginning, willingly embraced the limitations of human experience. He operated not out of self-interest or personal ambition, but fully submitted to the righteousness of His Father's will. It’s a powerful example of humility and obedience that serves as a countercultural lesson for us today.
In our own lives, we are often confronted with choices and ambitions that reflect our desires. The world around us encourages us to pursue our own dreams, to make a name for ourselves, and to follow our hearts. Yet, the life of Jesus invites us to reconsider what it means to live authentically. Following Jesus means setting aside our own wills to seek the divine purposes of God in our lives.
The implications of this submission are profound. When we surrender our desires and submit to God’s will, we open ourselves to a greater purpose. Life's journey transforms from one of self-centered pursuits to one of profound importance in God’s kingdom. This does not mean that our efforts or desires are unimportant; rather, it highlights that aligning ourselves with God’s will leads to fulfillment beyond what we can achieve alone. In Romans 12:2 (KJV), we are further encouraged: "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God."
Embracing God's will over our own also requires faith and trust. We may not always understand why certain paths are chosen for us, or why doors close where we thought we were meant to go. Like Jesus, we sometimes face moments of difficulty and uncertainty. Nevertheless, as we submit to the will of the Father, we can rest assured that His plans are always for our good, even when they don’t align with our expectations.
Consider the gardens of our lives where we grow our aspirations and dreams. When we tend to these gardens with a self-focused mindset, we risk cultivating weeds of disappointment, frustration, and disillusionment. Alternatively, when we invite God into this process and fervently seek His will, our gardens flourish. He helps us prune away the unneeded branches and redirects our focus to the fruits of the Spirit.
Today, take time to reflect on your own will versus God’s will. Are there areas where you are resisting God’s direction? What dreams do you need to lay down before Him? As we embrace a posture of submission, our lives will reflect the truth of Christ’s mission: serving not our own will but the will of Him who has sent us. Let each of us strive to echo Christ’s obedience, leading us to a life rich in purpose and filled with His glory.
