The Eternal Word at the Beginning of Everything

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." - John 1:1

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." - John 1:{verse.verse_number}

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1, KJV)

John opens his Gospel with a sentence so weighty that it feels like standing at the edge of infinity. “In the beginning was the Word.” Before time began to tick, before light broke into the darkness, before anything that can be measured or named existed, the “Word” already was. John does not say the Word came into being, or the Word was created, or the Word was formed. He simply says, “was.” The Word is eternal. This means that when our lives feel fragile—when seasons change, bodies weaken, plans unravel, and certainty evaporates—we are invited to anchor ourselves in Someone who is not temporary. The Word does not shift with time, and does not diminish with circumstance. He simply is.

John continues: “and the Word was with God.” This short phrase reveals relationship—communion, fellowship, and nearness. The Word was not isolated, distant, or detached. He was “with God,” face-to-face in perfect unity. Here we learn that God is not lonely or incomplete. Before creation ever existed, there was fullness—holy fellowship. This matters for the heart that feels abandoned. The God revealed in John 1:1 is not a cold force; He is living, personal, and relational. If the Word was “with God” from the beginning, then relationship is not an afterthought in God’s plan. Communion is part of God’s nature. When Christ calls us to Himself, He is not inviting us into a mere system of beliefs, but into fellowship with the living God.

Then John declares: “and the Word was God.” This is not poetic exaggeration; it is a direct confession of the deity of the Word. The Word is not merely a messenger from God. He is not a created helper who stands near the divine. “The Word was God.” All that God is—His holiness, His authority, His purity, His power, His truth—is true of the Word. This means our faith rests on an unshakable foundation. We do not hope in human wisdom elevated to religious status; we trust in God Himself.

Consider how these three statements reshape everyday life. If the Word is eternal (“In the beginning was the Word”), then He is not late to your story. He is not catching up to your pain. He has not discovered your need only after you prayed. The One you call upon existed before every fear you carry. Your anxiety may feel ancient, but the Word is older still. Your burden may feel immovable, but the Word stands before the foundations of the world.

If the Word “was with God,” then He is not indifferent. Eternal fellowship does not produce coldness; it reveals perfect love and purpose. The same divine communion that existed before creation is the backdrop to everything God does. When you feel unseen, remember that the God who has always known perfect fellowship also knows how to bring you into it. Your prayer is not a message thrown into the void. It is spoken in the presence of the One who has always been “with God.”

And if “the Word was God,” then the voice we need most is not the voice of our changing emotions, the voice of the crowd, or even the voice of our own self-accusation. The ultimate authority over your life is the Word who is God. His truth outranks every lie. His verdict is higher than every criticism. His nature is purer than your mixed motives, and His power is greater than your strongest temptation.

John 1:1 also quietly challenges us: What place does the Word have in our “beginning” each day? Many mornings start with hurry, worry, and noise. Yet the Gospel begins with the Word. To begin with Him is to begin with stability, truth, and God Himself. When life feels scattered, return to what was true “in the beginning.” Let your first confidence be that the Word is eternal, your first comfort be that the Word is “with God,” and your first surrender be that the Word “was God.”

Prayer: Lord, thank Thee for Thy Word who was in the beginning, who was with God, and who was God. When my life feels uncertain, draw me back to Thy eternal certainty. When I feel alone, remind me that Thou art the God of perfect fellowship. When I am tempted to trust lesser voices, teach me to bow to the authority of the Word. Let my days begin with Thee, and let my heart rest in who Thou art. Amen.
